Una de tantas plazas construidas durante la colonia Española en Cuba, especificamente en el año 1559, tiene un estilo ecléctico y se conserva en perfectas condiciones, ya que formó parte de un programa de reparación y reconstrucción llevado a cabo con fines turísticos y de conservación. En sus origenes se nombró Plaza Nueva, y no quedan registros de en que momento cambió su nombre, ya que al parecer tuvo otros antes del actual.
